Local referendum to dismiss mayor general takes place in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 19 November /MOLDPRES/ – The local referendum on dismissal of Mayor of Chisinau, Dorin Chirtoaca, is held in Chisinau today. The polling stations opened at 07:00 a.m. and will close at 09:00 p.m.

The deputy chairman of the Chisinau constituency electoral Council, Miron Vitalie, stated in a press briefing that the polling stations started their normal activity. "There were identified no incidents at their opening. There are included 628,683 voters within basic lists, out of which few are registered in Centru sector, and most are in Botanica sector of Chisimau municipality. Also, suburbs with the fewest voters included in the electoral lists is Condrita, and with most voters is Durlesti. The voting rates will be presented online in real – time," said Miron.

Altogether, there were opened 307 polling stations in Chisinau municipality. As for Dorin Chirtoaca to be dismissed, there are needed 163,571 votes for his dismissal. Similarly, in order to declare the referendum valid, one third of the number of voters registered in the Electronic State Register of Voters must be cast at the ballot boxes. The total number of printed bulletins for the referendum is over 632 thousand, for which was spent an amount of MDL 98,000.

The referendum on the dismissal of the mayor of Chisinau was initiated in March 2017 by socialists from the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC), who started to collect signatures on it.

There were two political parties into electoral campaign, for local referendum to dismiss the mayor general of Chisinau: the Socialists’ Party (PSRM) and the Liberal Party (PL). The other parties announced boycotting referendum or not getting involved at all.

Dorin Chirtoaca has been at the head of Chisinau since 2007. At present, he is investigated in two cases of traffick of influence and overcoming his working duties, being under judicial control. The mayor of Chisinau, temporarily suspended from office, dismisses the charges and declares himself innocent.
