Chisinau, 16 February /MOLDPRES/ - The temporarily suspended from office mayor of Chisinau, Dorin Chirtoaca, has resigned from his position. Chirtoaca made statements to this effect at a news conference today.
“I see no other solution but to resign from post. If I remain in office, I become accomplice. I see no other solution than snap elections in Chisinau, in order to unlock things. Personally, I bear responsibility only before citizens, as I got the mandate from them. I give up the office of mayor as a token of protest and abuse against the city, but in no case as recognition of my guilt in the file,” Chirtoaca said.
“The Chisinau citizens have understood that it is about the usurpation of power. People want a mayor elected. I have no possibility to return to power, as I do not afford doing this. At the same time, I am not sure that new local polls will be organized, as they will be blocked,” Chirtoaca added.
According to Chirtoaca, the new local elections are to be held on 20 May 2018.
