Chisinau, 18 February /MOLDPRES/ - The World Bank’s Board of Directors has approved an additional financing of ten million dollars for the project, Education Reform in Moldova.

‘’One of the greatest concerns is the gap between the labour market’s demand and the training presently provided by the education system from Moldova,’’ World Bank Country Manager for Moldova Anna Akhalkatsi has said. ‘’The development of competences is an essential component of our partnership with Moldova, as we are set to help people from Moldova have the needed knowledge and competences to get good jobs at home, so that they do not have to leave their families, looking for a better living outside the country,’’ Anna Akhalkatsi noted.

The additional financing will contribute to the backing of the Moldovan cabinet’s efforts to continue improving the quality and efficiency of the primary and general secondary education. A considerable number of pupils, teachers and school headmasters from Moldova will benefit from comprehensive training activities, continuous providing of equipment for science laboratories and Information Technologies and Communication, as well as the training of auxiliary teaching staff, in order to promote the inclusive education for pupils with special needs and/or disabilities.

The Education Reform project regards the country’s priorities of reducing poverty and promotion of shared growth, identified within the systematic country diagnosis for Moldova, made by the World Bank in 2016, and is in line with the goals of the Moldova National Development Strategy 2020.

More than one billion dollars has been earmarked for about 60 country operations since Moldova’s joining the World Bank in 1992. At present, the WB’s portfolio includes nine active projects, with the overall sum of commitments amounting to 341.5 million dollars. The support sectors include the reform of the regulatory framework and developing business, modernization of governmental services, fiscal administration, education, roads, medical assistance, agriculture, adaptation to climate changes and energy sector.
