Head of European Union delegation says EU to continue monitor fulfillment of commitments assumed by Moldova

Chisinau, 01 March /MOLDPRES/ – The European Union relies on developing relations with Moldova, but will continue to monitor and evaluate fulfillment of commitments made under the Association Agreement with EU. The head of EU Delegation to Moldova, Peter Michalko, made the statement during a press conference held today after half a year of activity in Moldova.

Peter Michalko specified that there were held several visits of European officials during that period, meetings with human rights experts, conclusions of EU Council on Moldova, including summaries of undertaken actions by authorities of Moldova in Chisinau and expectations of the European partners.

"Moldova is an important partner for EU and it is very necessary to maintain the existing dialogue. The EU has shown its support for Moldova, including by providing financial support. However, there are decisions that I did not approve, I am referring to the approval of the new electoral system, which, in our opinion, did not respect recommendations of the Venice Commission. The implementation of new electoral system is to be monitored during parliamentary elections," said the official.

The Head of EU Delegation in Chisinau said that European partners would assess activity of authorities in Moldova and there have been respected commitments included in Agreement and Association Agenda.

"There are needed further reforms, especially within justice. An important factor remains to be the fight against corruption. EU authorities want to see economical growth, human rights, free media and improved living conditions. We want the development of economic relations, especially since the Free Trade Agreement brings many positive results and contributes to increased exports, job creation and wage growth. Now, EU is the main source of investment in Moldova and we want them to grow further," said Peter Michalko.

EU Ambassador to Moldova, Peter Michalko, has been in office since September 2017, after former Ambassador, Pirkka Tapiola, finished his mandate.
