Chisinau, 6 March /MOLDPRES/- The Democratic Party of Moldova will not submit its own candidate to the local elections in Chisinau, but will support a single candidate who will have the support of all pro-European parties. Democrat leader Vlad Plahotniuc made the statement today.
Plahotniuc said that deputy head of the party Vladimir Cebotari will deal with the negotiations with the pro-European parties.
“PDM decided to support in the early local elections a single candidate of pro-European parties. We will back the person who will achieve the highest political support from the relevant right-wing parties, namely PAS, PL, PPDA and PPEM,” he said.
He added that his party is willing to support in the local elections even the fiercest critics of the PDM, provided that the candidate has the support of the right-wing, can manage the city hall and defeat the Socialists.
“It is necessary to create a common front so as not to lose the battle for the capital. If the pro-European parties go to elections with one candidate, there are chances to win the city hall in the first round. In the local elections the politicians pass a maturity test, a test that directly relates to the fate of the autumn elections,” he said.
He ruled out rumors that PDM would try to cancel early local elections or organize them in the autumn. “Everything is fake, PDM’s stance is that local elections must take place in legal terms,” he concluded.
The mayor’s seat remained vacant earlier this month after former mayor Dorin Chirtoaca announced he had resigned.
