Chisinau, 12 March /MOLDPRES/ - The State Nature Reserve „Plaiul Fagului” (Beech Tree Region) marks its 26th anniversary of its foundation today. Presently, this protected area is one of the most important natural laboratories of scientific researches in the biological sector in the region, with a unique flora component.
„Plaiul Fagului” has an area of more than 5,600 hectares, placed in the north of the central Ungheni district, nearby the Radenii Vechi village. The reserve was created as an ecosystem of conservation and development of biodiversity, environmental protection, as well as for scientific research. The reserve has become an important platform for studies in the field, carried out by scientists of specialized institutions of the Academy of Sciences (ASM) and State University of Moldova, as well as for the implementation of more international projects.
Besides its ecological and scientific importance, the „Plaiul Fagului” Reserve is considered also in the context of the formation of valuable national and international touristic routes. Thus, during 2017, over 2,000 tourists visited the protected area.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, the director of the „Plaiul Fagului” Reserve, Boris Curos, informed that, in next autumn, the Radenii Vechi centre of information and ecological education is to be opened, which will also contribute to the development of tourism. “The launch of this centre will be possible due to the support of partners from Poland and Ungheni district authorities. The centre will have arranged a hall for information activities and an exhibition of species of plants, insects and animals living in the reserve, including those written in the Red Book,” Boris Curos noted.
„Plaiul Fagului” was founded under cabinet decision from 12 March 1992, as a result of the reorganization of the forest and hunting farm „Pădurea Rădeni” (Radeni Forest). So far, about 1,500 species included in the strict state protection regime have been recorded here. Starting from 2013, the State Nature Reserve from the Ungheni district has been hosting the international festival „Sărbătoarea Fagului” (Beech Tree Holiday), which became a visiting card of the settlement.
