Chisinau, 12 March /MOLDPRES/ - The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today repeatedly rejected the registration of an initiative group for holding a republican legislative referendum on the cancellation of the mixed voting system.

CEC head Alina Russu said that “the demand was turned down, as the plebiscite cannot be organized later than one year before the holding of the parliamentary polls, due this year.”

At the meeting, a representative of the civil society said that “CEC’s decision is anti-democratic and contrary to the citizens’ will and the reasons set forth represent just pretexts.”

The Commission’s ruling enters into forced on the date of its adoption and is published in Moldova’s Official Journal (Monitorul Oficial).

A repeated application for the registration of the initiative group was submitted to CEC on 23 February.

In last mid-January, the Commission rejected the first application on the registration of the initiative group for holding the republican legislative referendum on the cancellation of the mixed voting system. At that time, CEC head Alina Russu said that “the demand was turned down, for reasons that more nonconformities were discovered and the legal requirements were not observed.”

In late November 2017, more representatives of the civil society informed about the initiative on initiating a legislative referendum on the cancellation of the mixed electoral system, adopted by parliament in the final reading in last July.
