Chisinau, 13 March /MOLDPRES/ - A former MP, Iurie Bolboceanu, has been sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment for high treason.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the former lawmaker is to serve his term in a closed prison.
Prosecutors said that the former MP had been lured by an assistant of the military attaché of Russia’s Embassy in Moldova, who has status of diplomat, but, in fact, is an undercover officer of the Intelligence Principal Department of the General Staff of the Russian Defence Ministry, which is a foreign intelligence service.
Thus, during October 2016 – March 2017, Bolboceanu had more meetings and discussions with the officer, and instructed by the latter, he collected and delivered information of national interest, which could be used to the detriment of Moldova.
The information supplied regarded anticipatory data on strategies and tactics of national legislative reforms of major importance, accumulated from decision-making political figures, personal data and vulnerabilities of persons with high-ranking state offices, promoters of political reforms, tactical evolution of the actions of implementing the Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union, detailed information on intentions and legislative plans of the parliamentary groups at rule, based on data gathered from inside the political formations.
The former MP was rewarded financially for the data accumulated and transmitted.
In an interview given with MOLDPRES, the head of the Prosecutor Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes, Nicolae Chitoroaga, said that prosecutors were presently investigating more cases of high treason. “The file opened for high treason against the former lawmaker, Iurie Bolboceanu, is the first case which was carried through. Nevertheless, there are more people who, in exchange of money sums, are ready to get involved in the foreign policy and undertake various actions which are dangerous for the state’s security,” Chitoroaga noted.
Iurie Bolboceanu was detained within this file in March 2017.
