Chisinau, 22 March /MOLDPRES/- The annual collection rate for waste electrical and electronic equipment is to be reached by producers by 2025 at 30 per cent compared to 5 per cent, set for 2020. The provision is included in the Regulation on waste electrical and electronic equipment, which will be published in the Official Journal of Moldova on 23 March.
At present, there is no organized waste management system for electrical and electronic equipment, although its volume on the market is increasing and becomes “virtually uncontrollable”. The total amount of the waste could increase from 10.5 thousand tons in 2010 to 21.7 thousand tons in 2027, according to the ministry. Doubling waste “will eventually lead to excessive pollution of the environment, with negative effects on the health of the country’s people.
The elaboration of the regulation is conditioned by the need to set up a complete system of recording placing on the market of electrical and electronic equipment for the purpose of further recovery, treatment and disposal in accordance with international standards.
The regulation is part of a general package of draft laws to create a legal framework for waste management, including hazardous waste in Moldova, implementing the international treaties and the main EU legislation on waste.
