Ground of Chisinau-based republican Stadium transmitted to U.S. Embassy in Moldova

Chisinau, 20 July /MOLDPRES/ - The ground of the Chisinau-based Republican Stadium will become property of the United States, in order to construct a new headquarters of the Embassy. The parliament passed the draft law on the transmission of the stadium, involving certain obligations, spending and tasks, in the first and second readings today.

The document provides for the “dismantling of the Republican Stadium from the Chisinau municipality, state’s public property, with an area of 5.1814 hectares, for the construction of the headquarters of the Embassy of the United States.”

At the parliament meeting, the draft law was criticized by the Party of Socialists (PSRM), Party of Communists and Liberal Party. At the same time, the transmission of the asset was backed by the MPs of the Democratic Party (PDM), who unveiled more benefits of the transaction. The draft was backed by the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) as well.

More lawmakers of the opposition showed concern about the sale of the sports ground. At the same time, they proposed that the money got from the sale be used for the construction of other sports buildings. Following discussions, the PSRM faction walked out of the session hall as a token of protest.

The document sees that the government will ensure the establishment of the value of the real estate, negotiation of the price and signing of the agreement on sale and purchase of the real estate, in order to guarantee the transmission of this asset, involving certain obligations, spending and tasks, to the Embassy.

The involvement of certain obligations, spending and tasks represents a contract under which each side has the goal to get an advantage in exchange of the obligations it takes.

The USA showed intention to buy the ground of the former stadium on 27 December 2017. Subsequently, the Moldovan government and the United States signed a memorandum on the procurement of the property for the construction of a new headquarters of the United States’ Embassy in Moldova.
