Chisinau, 23 July /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova has advanced, in terms of fighting the trafficking of human beings, from the rank Tier 2, watch list to Tier 2, in the report by the U.S. Department of State for 2018. The decision was taken following the positive results recorded by Moldova.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG), in the first half of this year, decision-makers registered 155 offences dealing with the trafficking of persons, illegal migration and related crimes, against 136 cases recorded in the same period of the last year. This increase is explained by the boosting of actions taken by law-enforcers to counteract the concerned offences.

On this period, prosecutors sent 85 criminal files of this category to court, which is by 37 per cent more against the same period of 2017.

According to the analysis, three out of four criminal files concerning trafficking of persons and related crimes are submitted to magistrates in order to decide on the charges brought by prosecutors.

Also, in the first half of this year, prosecutors prosecuted and sent to court six organized crime groups specialized in trafficking of human beings, which is by over 40 per cent more against the last year.

Also on this period, prosecutors backed the accusation and managed to prove the guilt of 33 persons charged with the committing of offences of trafficking of human beings and trafficking of children; 24 conviction sentences have been pronounced, which represents an increase in the number of convictions by more than 100 per cent against the same period of 2017. Prosecutors’ study also shows that the people convicted for this category of offences were given punishments between four and 18 years imprisonment.

Also, to optimize the work of preventing and combating offences concerning the trafficking of human beings, the Anti-trafficking Green Line has been set at PG, at the mobile phone (+373)69999021 and email [email protected], where victims can ask for help.
