Sugar beet harvest could reach up to 40 tons per hectare in 2018

Chisinau, 13 August /MOLDPRES/- Sugar beet harvest could reach this year up to 40 tons per hectare. Vasile Sarban, head of the policy production, processing and regulation of quality of products of plant origin within the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, made the statement.
Sarban said that of the 20 thousand hectares of sugar beet cultivated this year, around 800 thousand tons of beet will be harvested. About 116 thousand tons of sugar would be produced.
According to data by the Ministry of Agriculture, 117.9 thousand tons of sugar were still on the domestic market at the end of the first half of this year.
At the same time, the State Hydrometeorological Service has more pessimistic forecasts. It estimates for 2018 a sugar beet of about 30-33 tons/ha on average. The average crop for the past 10 years was 31 tons / ha.
Last year, the sugar beet harvest per hectare was 36.9 tons. The best harvest of sugar beet was recorded in 2014, when 44.36 tons of beet was harvested from one hectare.
