Moldovan parliament speaker meets with State Secretary of Holy See

Chisinau, 15 September /MOLDPRES/ – Parliament Speaker, Andrian Candu, had a meeting with the Secretary of State for the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

During the discussions Andrian Candu appreciated the support and assistance of the Church in promoting European unity, the spirit of tolerance and peace in the world.

The speaker referred to a series of legislative amendments, approved by Parliament, to promote family values. It is about granting paternity leave, applying tough sentences for domestic violence, approving a social package that allows young families to buy a dwelling, etc. In this context, the Speaker of Parliament referred upon the importance of tolerance and respect for all members of society.

At his turn, Secretary of State of the Holy See welcomed the legislative amendments approved by Parliament in promoting family values ​​and urged the political class to unity and joint work for the benefit of citizens.

The discussions also focused on the work carried out by the Roman Catholic Church in Moldova, both on religious realms and in education, humanitarian, social, recovery of victims of trafficking in human beings, assistance for disadvantaged categories of the population.

For the first time in Moldova, the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin signed the Honorary Book of Parliament and visited plenary session hall.

The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Vatican were established in 1993. The Roman Catholic Church of Moldova marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the first structures in Moldova in 2018.
