Romanian actor, stage manager becomes Doctor Honoris Causa of Chisinau-based Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy

Chisinau, 20 September /MOLDPRES/ - The Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy (AMTAP) today conferred the academic title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Romanian actor and stage manager, Director General of the Bucharest-based I.L Caragiale National Theatre, President of the Theatre Union of Romania Ion Caramitru.  

In his speech, AMTAP Rector Victoria Melnic said that the concerned title had been handed to the distinguished artist “as a token of respect and appreciation for the entire work, for contribution brought both to the development of the Romanian cultural and artistic life and to strengthening the cooperation relations of students and professors of our institution with famous personalities of the Romanian theatre.”  

In the context, the dean of the Faculty of Theatrical Art, Choreography and Multimedia, university professor Svetlana Tartau said that she had the idea to give this academic title to the well-known actor, as Ion Caramitru is a distinguished personality of the Romanian culture and had been cooperating with the Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy for more years.    

For his part, the director of the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre, Petru Hadarca, stressed that Ion Caramitru was bearer of legend and creator of legend – human and artistic one.     

Contacted by MOLDPRES, Ion Caramitru said that it was an honour for him to receive this title in the hall where Sfatul Tarii (Country Council) voted the Act of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania on 27 March 2018. “The profession of actor helped me preserve the conscience intact and go the way of justice,” the master stressed.       

More personalities of Moldova’s cultural life conveyed congratulatory messages to the famous Romanian actor and stage manager.

Ion Caramitru was born in Bucharest on 9 March 1942. He graduated from I.L. Caragiale Institute of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography from Bucharest in 1964. One year earlier, he debuted at the Bulandra Theatre of Bucharest, playing the leading part in Hamlet by William Shakespeare. In 1990-93, Caramitru was director of the Bulandra Theatre and in 1996-2000 – Culture Minister of Romania. Starting from 1990, Ion Caramitru has been president of the Theatre Union of Romania and beginning with 2005 – director of the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre from the Romanian capital. In 2006, the magazine Times included Ion Caramitru among the best ten actors who played the part of Hamlet in the world.
