Chisinau, 21 September /MOLDPRES/- Commercial banks drew in August from economic agents and people 2.59 billion lei as term deposits, up by over one billion than in the previous month, according to the National Bank of Moldova (BNM).

Legal entities made savings amounting to over 1.4 billion lei, while private people deposited in banks about 1.2 billion lei.

Although interest rates of banks dropped to an average of 3.79 percent on economic agents' deposits and 4.67 percent on term deposits of the population, the amount deposited in banks in August is the second largest after May when the deposits amounted to 2.86 billion lei. The interest rate diminished as the annual inflation rate dropped by 3.2 percent in August, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

BNM data show that the economic agents and people prefer to make savings in banks in national currency. In August deposits in foreign currency were made in the equivalent amount of 1.2 billion lei at an interest rate of 0.86% per year. About 92 percent of foreign currency deposited with banks in term came from the population.
