Chisinau, 21 September /MOLDPRES/ - The MPs of the People’s Assembly of the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauz-Yeri (APG), at a today’s meeting, ruled that the elections of the autonomy’s governor will take place on 19 May 2019.
Under this decision, the APG members did not support a proposal by the present bashkan (governor) of Gagauz-Yeri, Irina Vlah, who asked the Comrat legislative body to hold the ballot till the Easter holidays of the next year, on 17 February. Vlah made reference to the legislation, which allows organizing the polls three months before the expiration of the mandate of the incumbent bashkan.
Following more contradictory discussions, the lawmakers of the People’s Assembly voted for holding the elections of the bashkan on 19 May, with 18 votes for, ten ones against and three abstentions.
The governor (bashkan) is the supreme official of the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauz-Yeri. All public administration authorities of the autonomy subordinate to the bashkan. The elections of the governor are held once in four years.
