Chisinau, 9 October /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s citizens might directly elect the judges. The leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), Vlad Plahotniuc, today made statements to this effect. He noted that a draft decision to this end would be worked out soon.
According to Plahotniuc, an analysis unveiled by government colleagues at the PDM meeting shows that, in the last two years, more reforms have been carried out in the justice sector than in all the governances of the previous years.
„The reforms in the justice sector were meant to strengthen the independence of justice. Nevertheless, a perception still persists that this field is not quite independent or several groups would intervene in the justice act. Therefore, the Democratic Party has prepared a draft decision of the parliament, which charges the parliament’s juridical commission with elaborating a draft law on Constitution’s amendment, which would allow judges being elected by the people,” Plahotniuc said.
The PDM leader also said that the draft would be discussed initially with the civil society and would be subsequently put on the tables of MPs to be considered and put up for vote.
