Chisinau, 9 October /MOLDPRES/- A modern sports complex was recently opened in Şerpeni village, Anenii Noi district. The building has the capacity to host regional competitions and was built with the support of the European Union in a project implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
Now, thanks to European funding of over 180,000 euros, the village has a complex that can host regional competitions.
"Rural communities on both banks of the Dniester face the same challenges, including ensuring the attractiveness of peripheral areas. This sports complex will meet more needs, and the villagers have to feel the same changes as in urban areas. The European Union will continue to back the modernization of socio-economic infrastructure," Head of Section of the EU Delegation to Moldova Marco Gemmer said.
Dafina Gercheva, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Permanent Representative in Moldova, said "this is a project that wins people's hearts and minds, building bridges of trust and setting up platforms to enhance cooperation relations between both banks of the Dniester."
The sports complex in Şerpeni is one of over 80 infrastructure objects, renovated through the EU-funded program Support to confidence-building measures and implemented by UNDP Moldova. It helps build confidence between residents on both banks of the Dniester River, involving local leaders, business and civil society representatives in joint business development projects and improving social infrastructure.
Thus, at the complex in Şerpeni there will also be able to train athletes from the left bank of the Dniestre River. "We are witnessing the construction of a new “bridge of trust "between both banks," Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Cristina Lesnic said.
