Chisinau, 11 October /MOLDPRES/ – A sector of the Cahul river, passing throughout Vulcanesti, was rehabilitated due to a project funded by EU. Thus, there will be avoided floods of several households that would suffer the consequences of precipitation.
Mayor of Vulcanesti, Victor Petrioglo, said that due to floods, the administration lost more than two million lei annually, or about 15 per cent of the local budget. "We have solved the problem of floods, mud and infections generated by all the river waste," said Victor Petrioglo.
The total cost of the Cahul river Cleaning and Settlement Project is about €127,000, of which €70,000 were provided by EU, and the difference was covered by the Gagauzia and the community budget.
From this money, there were cleaned the banks of the river, the bed was deepened, and there were built river access ways. The next step is to create a recreation area along the Cahul river.
The Vulcanesti works were possible with the EU assistance, provided by Programme "Support to Agriculture and Rural Development in ATU Gagauzia and Taraclia District" (SARD), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). SARD has a total budget of €6.5 million and intends to intensify cooperation between central and local authorities as well as regional organisations in UTA Gagauz-Yeri and Taraclia district.
