Judges might be elected directly by people in Moldova

Chisinau, 11 October /MOLDPRES/ - The juridical commission for rules and immunities will work out a draft law on the amendment and completion of Moldova’s Constitution on the election of judges directly by the people. The majority of the MPs present at the plenary meeting passed a decision to this effect today.
The initiative belongs to the leadership of the Democratic Party (PDM) and was presented by lawmaker Sergiu Sarbu at the plenary meeting. Thus, the juridical commission for rules and immunities will elaborate and submit to parliament, in a 30-day term, a draft on amendment and completion of the Constitution, which will allow election of judges directly by the people.
At the same time, the commission will publicly consult the draft and will be able to involve specialists of the Parliament’s Secretariat, State Chancellery, Justice Ministry, Superior Council of Magistracy, Central Electoral Commission in its elaboration. Also, the commission will be able to appeal to assistance of specialists and independent experts of Moldova and from abroad.
Earlier this week, PDM leader Vlad Plahotniuc informed that the formation he leads had prepared a draft parliament decision, which charges the parliament’s juridical commission with working out a draft law on Constitution’s amendment, which would allow the judges to be elected by the people.
