Poland supports opening of ecological education centre in west Moldova city

Chisinau, 12 October /MOLDPRES/ - The Radenii Vechi Centre of Ecological Information and Education today was opened at the Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve from the western Ungheni district. The centre is part of a project carried out by the Moldsilva Forestry Agency and local authorities, with the support of the Polish government.

The centre’s reconstruction started in June 2017 and the project’s cost was estimated at about five million lei, with the reserve’s contribution being of ten per cent. The works were provided for in the project titled, Development of rural tourism on the territory of the Ungheni district through sustainable use of natural resources, financed by the Polska Pomoc Programme (Poland).   

The project from Ungheni was implemented by the Romincka Forest Foundation and the Nature Reserve Plaiul Fagului, in cooperation with the Ungheni District Council and the Ungheni Agency for Regional Development and European Integration.    

The centre will contribute to the development of the tourism potential of the reserve, through the creation of interesting informative and ecological offers on eco-systems, flora and fauna of the reserve, life cycle of a wood. The centre has arranged a hall for information activities, conferences, an exhibition of species of plants, insects and animals living in the reserve, including those recorded in the Red Book, an administrative office and 12 accommodation places.  

"This centre is a valuable achievement for the national forest fund, especially for the protected area Plaiul Fagului. We expect the centre to have an important impact on the informing and enhancement of the degree of awareness of the need to protect the environment. At the same time, the centre has the goal to promote the forest tourism which has future in Moldova,” the director of the Moldsilva Agency, Ion Haralampov, has said, contacted by MOLDPRES.  

Throughout 2017, the Nature Reserve Plaiul Fagului was visited by more than 2,000 tourisms, both of Moldova and from abroad. A tourist itinerary is set on the territory of the reserve, in order to promote forest sectors with venerable trees. The length of the itinerary is 2.3 km; it can be covered in two hours and have a medium difficulty.
