Chisinau, 12 October /MOLDPRES/ - The voting for a draft on amendment of the Constitution through the introduction of the syntagm “European integration” has been postponed for the next week. The MPs took the decision at a proposal by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu.
The draft on the introduction of the syntagm “European integration” in the Constitution was presented by Andrian Candu and discussed in parliament for more than two hours and the lawmakers of the Party of Socialists walked out of the session hall as a token of protest.
“Even if there are hot political debates and geopolitical confrontations, which are not necessarily the best ones and have not done good to the country, probably there are few people in this state who do not understand that the European Union offers the best model of development at present. This is the biggest market for Moldova, this is a model on how the rights and freedoms, as well as the rule of law principles work,” Candu noted.
The MPs of the Party of Communists criticized the idea of introducing the European vector of development in the Constitution. At the same time, the lawmakers of the Liberal Party said they would vote for this, if the state’s official language is changed from “Moldovan”, as it is art present, into Romanian, in the Constitution.
The initiative on amending the constitution belongs to a group of MPs of the parliament’s ruling coalition. The draft was elaborated by a working group, set up under the parliament decision No 209 from 6 October 2017. The groups involved in its work experts, representatives of the specialized academic environment and public authorities. The Constitutional Court adopted a notification to the draft law on the amendment and completion of Moldova’s Constitution on 11 December 2017.
According to the legislation in force, the votes of at least two thirds of all lawmakers are needed for the amendment of the Constitution.
