Moldovan authorities to sanction burning of leaves, vegetal waste

Chisinau, 20 October /MOLDPRES/ - The burning of vegetal waste is banned and will be sanctioned. The Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry (MADRM) has issued a warning to this effect. The ministry will make controls in areas along with representatives of local authorities, Interior Ministry and Inspection for Environmental Protection.
“Persons burning leaves and household waste will pay fines, according to the Contravention Code. Under the law, private people are sanctioned with fine worth from 600 lei up to 1,200 lei and or with unremunerated labour for the good of the community of up to 60 hours. Legal entities are imposed fines worth from 4,500 lei up to 9,000 lei,” according to a MADRM press release.
Specialists warn that the noxious substances emitted as a result of burning leaves are accumulated in air layer at the surface of the soil, with different toxic substances emanated. Among them, there are the carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, soot, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and dioxins – the most toxic and dangerous organic compounds of complex composition.
These chemical substances may cause, even in small quantities, intoxications of the respiratory ways, diseases of the central nervous system, eye’s membrane, penetrating the atmosphere, soil and surface waters. In the context, especially elderly people, those suffering from cardiovascular diseases or respiratory allergies are warned to be cautious.
