Chisinau, 21 October /MOLDPRES/ - About 200,000 people and 265 public institutions from various settlements of Moldova have access to green energy, as a result of the Energy and Biomass project, financed by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project, which ended its activity after a seven-year mandate, was summed up this week.
The Energy and Biomass project of Moldova is a success story which proves once again how the support provided by the European Union creates new opportunities and improves the people’s quality of life. For more than seven years, EU has invested much ‘’energy’’ in the development of the biomass sector in Moldova. By this project, decision-makers have created, in a quite short period, a new economic sector, which brought new jobs and the residents turned from consumers into producers of energy,’’ Head of the EU Delegation in Chisinau, Ambassador Peter Michalko said.
The investments in the new heating systems, worth over 13 million euros in all, provided by the European Union, had a multiple impact for the development of those 186 villages and towns beneficiaries of the project, favouring the creation of new jobs, development of new businesses and enhancement of the local energy security.
„In 2011, the renewable energy accounted for 8 per cent of the country’s overall energy mix. In 2018, this index is of 14.7 per cent and 98 per cent of the renewable energy comes from biomass. This is a true transformation, which is due, to a great extent, to the project, or the achievement would not have been possible without the successful partnership between EU, national partners and UNDP,’’ a deputy resident representative of the UNDP, Stefan Liller, said.
The Energy and Biomass project was implemented on the period 2011-2018 and had an overall budget of 23.41 million euros, provided by the European Union, being co-financed (560,000 euros) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.
