Chisinau, 9 November /MOLDPRES/- Cantemir is among the first cities in Moldova to manage street lighting with intelligent and energy-efficient technologies. The new system was inaugurated yesterday after being installed and tested in a project funded by the European Union.
The new street lighting system allows remote routing and control via GSM mobile networks, without operators leaving the workplace, thus saving time to solve emergencies. Also, the timing and intensity of lighting can be changed, depending on the time period and the degree of use of the street. "Such intelligent technology, combined with energy-efficient LED lamps, allows up to 80% energy saving compared to the base line, delivering good road-lighting quality. This system will save tens of thousands of lei per year," sources in the Alliance for Energy and Renewable Efficiency said.
"Reducing electricity costs will ensure not only protect the environment, but will also improve public services. This is important for the municipal budget, because the saved funds will be used for new investments in areas such as: education, social projects," Roman Ciubaciuc, Mayor of Cantemir, said.
The new lighting system in the locality has become possible thanks to the EU-funded project "Green Light to Moldova! Modernization and Efficiency of Street Lighting ", implemented in Cantemir and Ocnita by the Energy and Renewable Efficiency Alliance in collaboration with local public authorities, under the Mayors' Convention programme.
Gintautas Baranauskas, Representative of the EU Delegation to Moldova, said "this is a success story that once again demonstrates the concrete and tangible benefits that have been brought to Moldovans thanks to EU support."
The project is worth 250,000 euros, of which 80% are EU grants, 30,000 euros - Cantemir's contribution and 20,000 euros - grant from the Energy Efficiency Fund.
