51 children died of pneumonia last year

Chisinau, 12 Novermber /MOLDPRES/- In 2017, 51 children died of pneumonia, half of whom died at home. Disease is one of the most common causes of death in children up to five years of age. In order to raise awareness about the problem, the authorities are carrying out more information actions today, when World Pneumonia Day is celebrated.
The head of the National Agency for Public Health Information and Communication Service, Olesea Croitor, said that this year the event has the slogan: Stop Pneumonia: invest in children's health, and aims to raise awareness about pneumonia.
During the World Pneumonia Day, emphasis is put on joining efforts for increased actions and investments, both social and economic, as well as improving immunization and strengthening health systems to cope with this scourge.
Pneumonia is a common respiratory illness that in 2000-2015 caused 920,000 deaths annually globally. In Moldova the incidence of respiratory diseases was 5,223 cases per 10 thousand persons. in 2017, 51 children died of pneumonia, compared to 57 in 2016.
