Chisinau, 14 November /MOLDPRES/- Moldovan seed producers will be able to export their products to the European Union market. The decision, adopted by the European Parliament, was published in the EU's Official Journal earlier this week and will enter into force in December 2018. Director-General of the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) Gheorghe Gaberi made the statement today.
Gaberi noted that the European Parliament's decision recognized the seed control and inspection system in Moldova, which has become equivalent to that in the EU. The decision was taken after our country was subject to an audit in summer of 2016, where the inspection and control system was evaluated throughout the entire seed production chain.
According to Gaberi, Moldova has a rich seed production experience and has potential to export seed product. The seed needs for agriculture in the country are estimated at about 120-125 thousand tons annually. The head of the ANSA said that several European companies previously expressed their intention to invest in seed production in our country, but they hesitated to do so because domestic seed material so far could not be exported to the EU market.
At present, Moldova can export fruit propagating material to the EU.
