Number of people sick with diabetes increases in Moldova

Chisinau, 14 November /MOLDPRES/ - The number of people sick with diabetes is on the rise in Moldova. Thus, in 2017, more than 104, 000 patients were registered, by 8,000 more than in the year before. At the same time, 400 persons died because of this disease last year. The figures were unveiled by Health, Labour and Social Protection Minister Silvia Radu, in the context of the World Diabetes Day, marked today.
At a news conference, Silvia Radu said that diabetes was one of the most pressing problems of the 21st century, being a burden for the health system. The minister also said that each second person with diabetes had not been diagnosed in time. In the context, the early diagnosis and the efficient treatment are the basic elements for the prevention of the diabetes’ complications.
According to the minister, the authorities are set to introduce the administration of insulin analogues for people sick with diabetes and the sale of insulin in cartridges, instead of bottles. At the same time, patients will be provided with free of charge tests, in order to periodically check the level of sugar in blood.
In order to raise the residents’ awareness about the impact of diabetes on the family, the authorities launched a string of actions due to be carried out in more settlements from Moldova. Thus, during this week, activities of communication on the adoption of a sound lifestyle, actions of population’s screening will be organized, in order to discover the blood sugar level and train people living with diabetes.
The head of the Prodiab Association, Boris Golovin, said that today about 200 volunteers would carry out the screening of the blood sugar level in more than 100 public locations in Chisinau.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, there were 425 million adults sick with diabetes in 2017. A person dies of this disease in the world each seven seconds.
