Chisinau, 23 November /MOLDPRES/- Moldova and Romania will create joint teams that will patrol the common border between the two states. A protocol on the matter was signed in Bucharest yesterday.
The document provides for joint patrolling an area of 10 km from the border line inside the territory of Moldova and Romania. By way of exception, territorial applicability may extend beyond the operating area, due to the configuration of land and road infrastructure.
Moldovan Border Police said the document aims to improve the cooperation between the border institutions of the two states and increase joint border surveillance.
The head of the Border Police, Fredolin Lecari said that joint patrolling will save forces and means and provide opportunity to broaden skills in application of common tactics to counteract border crime and illegal migration.
Joint patrolling is practiced by most European countries, especially those at the EU’s external border, and has several advantages such as: combating smuggling, illegal migration and other illegal actions.
Since 2011, the coordinated patrol has been carried out at the Moldovan-Romanian border, providing only on the Prut river (by boat).
