Chisinau, 25 November /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Pavel Filip on 24 November participates in events of commemorating the victims of Holodomor, held in Kiev, Ukraine. Holodomor is regarded as a tragedy of the 20th century – the famine was organized by the Stalinist regime in the 1932-1933 years, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
At an international forum dedicated to the victims of Holodomor, the prime minister said that the death of millions of Ukrainians had been caused by the policies of the Stalinist regime, which aimed at destroying the national consciousness and at establishing fear.
The PM noted that each victim had a special place in the history and Moldova would always back Ukraine’s initiatives to keep these events alive in people’s memory. ‘’Presently, we are everybody obliged to remember the tragedies of the past, in order to be able to assess the present and be able to look into the future. We also, in Moldova, understand the grief you have, as we experienced similar tragedies in late 1940s – hundreds of thousands of people died because of the organized famine at that time. These wounds are still open wounds, but they are our wounds and they are part of what we are at present,’’ Pavel Filip said.
At the same time, the prime minister stressed that Moldova remained by the side of Ukraine at present too, when our neighbours face new challenges related to the well-being and integrity of the country and its citizens.
”Currently, there are also attempts against our values, against the dignity and freedom of our countries. You should know that you will always find a friend in Chisinau. Given that great things are, in fact, things which we do together. Together, we can do so that our citizens live in free and democratic countries,’’ the prime minister added.
The ceremony continued with a march in the memory of the victims and an action titled, Light Candle, held at the memorial venue. This year, Ukraine marks the 85th anniversary of one of the most serious crimes – Holodomor. Leaders and officials from more countries took part in the commemoration events.
