President of Moldova's Academy of Sciences resigns

Chisinau, 29 November /MOLDPRES/ - President of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM) Gheorghe Duca has tendered resignation.

The announcement was made at an extraordinary meeting on 28 November, according to a statement published on ASM’s official website. Duca said that he gave up this office “for health reasons.”

„The decision coincides with the criminal trial on the salaries of our family, which has been recently updated. Nevertheless, not the direct repercussions of the trial prompted my withdrawal from office. There are other several reasons which prompted me to make this step namely now. The suspicions and uncertainty around this case increases my blood pressure and blood sugar and I do not want the situation with the health problem I had in last May to be repeated. Unfortunately, in the conditions of the new reforms, my experience of manager is no longer demanded; there are other expectations and other prerogatives,” Duca noted.  

„I remain with the hope that, in the circumstances that I will no longer be a public person, the justice will do justice and will have an objective and impartial attitude towards us, in order to put an end to public attacks and disparagements, made against me and against my family,” Gheorghe Duca added.  

In the end, the former ASM president thanked for cooperation.   

Gheorghe Duca was appointed president of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences in 2004. Presently, Duca and his wife are accused of abuse of power, resulted in material damage in particularly large amounts.
