Government of Italy supports efficient management project for river in Moldova

Chisinau, 29 November /MOLDPRES/ – The problems of smart management of the Botna river basin were discussed today during a seminar organised by Agency Apele Moldovei. The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under programme KEP ITALY 2017 and is aimed at communicating to the partners in Moldova the experience of efficient water basin management.

The project aims to transfer good practices, technologies on how to manage water resources, especially the Botna river, throughout the River Contract methodology. Its application has been initiated in several European countries since 1980 and has proved efficiency through the involvement of the entire society in the management of a river. "The good management of a river, even a small one, belongs to all social actors – central public authorities, local administration, specialised services, civil society, economic agents and simple citizens, interested in the quality of the environment they live in," specified sources of Agency Apele Moldovei.

In Moldova, the subject of study and application of the "river contract" methodology is Botna, which straddles throughout two districts (Ialoveni and Causeni). "Currently the state of the river is affected by a high degree of pollution, being loaded with waste. The canal of the river has an advanced degree of clogging and it is at risk of flooding," said specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment (MADRM). However, the practice of the European partners indicates that drawing up a document called: River Contract will be a commitment to a rehabilitation programme, including a basis for identifying and collecting financial resources for good river management.

Project: The intelligent river management: Implementation of the river contract on the Botna river basin for integrated water resources management, was launched in 2017, the process being carried out at the second stage. The main coordinator of the project is Alta Scuola Training Centre in Orvieto city, Italy.
