Chisinau, 29 November /MOLDPRES/ – The strengthening of cooperation of Moldova and the Council of Europe (CoE) was discussed today in Chisinau during a meeting of the Democrats' party (PDM) leader, Vlad Plahotniuc, with the new Head of the Council of Europe Office in Moldova, William Massolin.
According to the PDM’s information and media communication service, the talks, which took place at the headquarters of PDM, focused on the political and economic situation in Moldova, including the preparations for elections.
According to the cited source, the PDM leader made a brief recapitulation of developments of Moldova in recent years, emphasising the stability of PDM governance, maintaining the road to the West, and economic progress since 2016.
The PDM leader informed the European official about the reforms that have taken place in Moldova, but also about raising the incomes of citizens, considering at the same time that there are still many things to do. As for the upcoming elections, Plahotniuc said that PDM wants a fair electoral process that respects democratic standards.
"We will ensure and we are more interested than anybody that parliamentary elections be transparent. Surveys show an increase in trust in the PDM," said Plahotniuc.
The head of the Council of Europe Office in Moldova, William Massolin, stated that the central elements of the Council of Europe's cooperation with Moldova have been constant since 1995 and are aimed at the existence of democratic institutions, the rule of law and respect for human rights. He reminded that in Moldova there have been carried out several projects with the support of the Council of Europe, adding that he would work constructively with the Moldovan authorities for the success of these projects.
"In the short term, together with the international partners present in Moldova, we will closely follow the parliamentary elections, which are very important for the political development of the country," said the European official.
The head of PDM expressed the wish that Moldova should cooperate more closely with the Council of Europe and strengthen the rule of law, because the positive economic prospects can be provided only in such a state.
William Massolin started his activity in Moldova in autumn 2018, having an important diplomatic experience within the CoE but also in EU and UN.
