Chisinau, 1 December /MOLDPRES/- A smart street lighting system was connected in Ocnita city. The project was carried out with European financial support under the Demonstration projects.
The total amount of the project is 250 thousand euros, of which the European Commission has allocated 200 thousand euros, and 50 thousand euros are means from the budget of the Ocniţa city hall and the Energy Efficiency Fund.
Ocniţa city is one of the signatories to the European initiative - Mayors' Convention on Climate and Energy. This has helped the city, with a population of seven thousand people, receive an EU grant and carry out a demonstration project that can be replicated in other localities interested in such initiatives.
By signing the Mayors Convention, Ocniţa was committed to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption by 20% by 2020. Under the project, 386 old lamps have been replaced by energy-efficient LEDs. There were illuminated 27 streets of the city, including the main street, street in the residential sector and streets adjacent to the Railway Station. The project also included points of social importance: the public transport station, the public garden, the kindergarten, the access road to the district hospital.
This is very important in meeting the city's climate commitments, as it will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere - up to 154 tons per year, equivalent to 7,000 planted trees. According to local experts, by replacing old inefficient lamps with modern LED lamps, it can save up to 50,000 lei / year from the budget of Ocnita.
