Moldovan parliament holds many actions on International Day of People with Disabilities

Chisinau, 3 December /MOLDPRES/- The challenges and difficulties faced by people with visual impairment were discussed today by the head of the parliamentary commission on social protection, health and family, Valentina Buliga, with the beneficiaries of the LOW VISION medical-social rehabilitation center in the capital. The event is part of the actions organized by parliament on the International Day of People with Disabilities, marked annually on 3 December, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
“Lately, authorities have implemented several policies for social inclusion of people with disabilities. Parliament has recently amended the Constitution of Moldova to ensure and promote equality in the full exercise of the fundamental rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities,” Buliga said.
According to the official, another important initiative is to promote employment through a proactive approach that proposes modern employment services and measures tailored to the needs of different categories of people, including young people, unskilled people, people with disabilities, the unemployed etc.
Buliga also approached services for disabled people, answered the questions of the parents of visually impaired children and appreciated the work of the LOW VISION Center. She noted that this year, for the founding and development of optometry in Moldova, Dr. Tatiana Ghidirimschi was awarded the highest distinction of parliament - Medal of Democracy.
For her part, Tatiana Ghidirimschi said that since the foundation of the LOW VISION centre, 2009, has provided 7,600 consultations to residents across the country. 1/3 of them concerned children. "We are glad that 50 per cent of pupils facing lower 10 per cent have been integrated into educational institutions, thanks to optical correction devices distributed free of charge by the center," the doctor said.
In the afternoon, Buliga will visit the boarding house for children with mental disabilities (girls) from Hancesti and will discuss with the employees, parents and beneficiaries of the institution.
Annually, on 3 December, the world community marks the International Day of People with Disabilities. This day was adopted by the United Nations in 1992 to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in everyday life.
