Eighty points for collecting e-waste to be created in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 10 December /MOLDPRES/ - Eighty points for the collection of electric and electronic equipment of small dimensions will be created in the Moldovan capital, within the project, Clean City with Recycled E-Waste. Another eight dumpsters for collecting e-waste of large dimensions will be set nearby fuel supply stations from the Chisinau municipality.

The e-waste represents the waste of electric and electronic equipment, including worn-out portable batteries.

A head of directorate at the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry, Svetlana Bolocan, told a news conference that the initiate was aimed at informing economic agents and residents about the need to correctly collect and recycle this type of waste, in order to reduce the environment pollution indexes.

„The incorrect collection of e-waste leads to the contamination of the other assets stocked. Therefore, it is important that we select and deposit them separately. There are already authorized economic agents in Moldova, which deal with the collection of this type of waste; yet, we want to extent the network in the commercial units as well. At the same time, I inform you that the Regulation on electric, electronic equipment and their waste has already entered into force. Thus, producers, importers or those who sell these electric and electronic objects are obliged to create points for the collection of e-waste; otherwise, they will be sanctioned,” Bolocan said.

For her part, the project manager, Aurelia Bahnaru, noted that those 80 points for the collection of waste would be placed at public institutions, at the headquarters of economic agents which sell electric and electronic objects, at lyceums and universities.

„The goal of the project is to reduce the quantity of waste and inform citizens about the risks existing if the waste is collected incorrectly – the pollution of waters and soil. A map will be created within the initiative, on which the places of setting dumpsters are to be indicated. So far, two such dumpsters have been set at the headquarters of the Chisinau city hall and the one of the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry. The other dumpsters will be set in the next two weeks. Following the collection, the waste will be exported to other countries, where it is to be recycled and introduced in a new production process,” Bahnaru added.

The project Clean City with Recycled E-Waste has a budget of 45,000 dollars and is to be implemented during 18 months. At the same time, the authors of the initiative set that the project be extended all over Moldova subsequently.
