Moldova ratifies Council of Europe Convention on Manipulation of Sports Competitions

Chisinau, 27 December /MOLDPRES/ - The decree on promulgation and the law on ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions will be published in the Official Journal (Monitorul Oficial) of Moldova on 28 December.
Under the document, the notion “manipulation of sports competitions” refers to the “arranged matches”, illegal sports bets and corruption in sport.
The convention’s goal is to prevent, discover, punish and discipline as to the manipulation of sports results, as well as to improve the exchange of information internationally between the public authorities involved, sports organizations and operators of sports bets. The document recommends that sports organizations and competitions’ organizers adopt and enforce stricter rules of combating corruption in sport, tougher sanctions and disciplinary measures. The Convention also sees measures of defending informers and witnesses.
The document recommends that Moldova’s authorities adopt measures, including legislative ones, of preventing conflicts of interests among sports organizations and operators of sports bets, as well as measures of counteracting illegal sports bets.
The Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions was compiled in Magglingen/Macolin, Switzerland, on 18 October 2014. So far, 15 states have signed the document.
