Chisinau, 10 January /MOLDPRES/ - The State Hydrometeorological Service (SHS) announced Yellow Code of unstable ice for 10-18 January.
According to hydrologists, given the snow fallen, the ice will be unstable and masked by snow on small rivers and water basins from Moldova and getting on this ice will pose danger. SHS warns fishermen to be cautious and parents are warned to supervise their children. “This is a more complicated period, when the ice in not safe and skating or fishing on this ice may have tragic consequences; therefore, it is good to avoid these activities, at least on the period of the hydrological warning,” sources from the State Hydrometeorological Service told MOLDPRES.
The Yellow Code of complicated weather conditions is maintained till 11 January. Thus, according to the meteorologists, a southern cyclone will cause complicated weather conditions on the territory of Moldova on the concerned period, triggered by heavy precipitation (5-20 litres/square metre, up to 25 l/square metre in some regions). On 10 January, snowfall is expected, rain and sleet in the southern region and snowfall is forecast throughout Moldova for 11 January.
“Snowstorm will be temporarily; snow drifts will appear on roads, with silver thaw on electric wires and branches. The north-western wind will gust up to 15-20 metres/second on 11 January,” according to a SHS press release.
In this context, rescuers warn residents to take into account the weather forecast and not set out for long journeys, if not necessary. If these journeys are indispensable, the clothes put on should fit the air temperature outdoors and in risky situations, they should urgently call the 112 Service. Also, people are asked to avoid moving on road segments, where branches and electric wires are hanging, in order to avoid injuries.
In case of Yellow Code, the weather conditions are potentially dangerous; the forecast meteorological phenomena are usual for Moldova’s territory; yet, temporarily, they may become dangerous for certain social and economic activities.
