Chisinau, 16 January /MOLDPRES/ - The city hall of the western Ungheni municipality has launched a project titled, Adopt a Public Area!, due to be carried out during 2019-2021. The programme is an initiative by the Resource Centre for Local and Regional Sustainable Development and is aimed at making more attractive the districts of the Ungheni city.

Adopt a Public Area! is a programme of green education and urban arrangement. The programme sees the “adoption” of a public area for a period of three years, in order to be maintained and arranged. The ground can be placed nearby the organization which “adopts’ it or can be another green area (a square, an alley, etc.), selected from a list proposed by the Ungheni city hall. The institutions willing “to adopt” a public area will work out projects on arrangement, will buy and will plant decorative trees, bushes, flowers, grass and will deal with adornment during holidays. “Through this programme, we are set to modernize and provide a better maintenance of the green areas and other public areas placed in the city,”  Ungheni mayor Alexandru Ambros said.

According to Ambros, the programme, Adopt a Public Area!, is an innovative approach of what means civic activism and involvement of the community. “The arrangement and maintenance of public areas by economic agents and public institutions is already practiced in Ungheni. We are set to do this in an organized way, jointly with specialists in urban arrangement,” Alexandru Ambros said.

“We took over this idea from the city hall of the Cluj Napoca municipality – a twinned city with Ungheni. This is a practice which inspired us and we hope that it will be successfully implemented in the Ungheni city as well. I am sure that, through the involvement of the community, public areas can become more arranged, greener, friendlier and meet the standards of the European urban landscape,” the Ungheni mayor added.
