Romanian foreign affairs minister says Moldova one of major priorities on period of presidency at EU Council

Chisinau, 17 January /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova is one of the major priorities of Romania on the period of presidency at the European Union’s Council. Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu made statements to this effect at a joint conference with Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Tudor Ulianovschi in Chisinau today.  

The Romanian diplomacy head noted that his country had taken over the presidency of the Council of the European Union in a year with a special significance, as the tenth anniversary of the Eastern Partnership’s launch and the fifth anniversary of the free visa regime are marked in 2019. “We must ripen the relation between EU and Moldova and move towards its boosting. Moldova is one of the major priorities of Romania on the period of presidency at the EU’s Council,” Melescanu said.    

He reiterated Romania’s support for Moldova’s European integration, stressing that his country had been and would remain a faithful advocate of Moldova at EU.   

Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Tudor Ulianovschi thanked his Romanian counterpart for support, noting that Romania’s mandate at the presidency of the EU’s Council would be an impetus for Moldova to press ahead with the reforms.  

"The present visit takes place in a context with a strong symbolism – the taking over of the rotating presidency at the European Union’s Council by Romania on 1 January. We have always highly appreciated the continuous and trenchant support by Romania for Moldova’s European agenda, both at the political level and at the practical one,” Ulianovschi said.  

Romania’s Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu today is on a working visit to Chisinau, at an invitation by Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Tudor Ulianovschi. Also today, the Moldovan authorities awarded the medal Diplomatic Merit, first class, to the Romanian official.
