Number of corruption cases with policemen's involvement down by 40 per cent in Moldova

Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ - The number of corruption offences with the involvement of policemen has decreased by 40 per cent in the last year. The head of the General Police Inspectorate, (IGP), Alexandru Panzari, today made statements to this effect. He informed about the launch of an information and awareness-raising campaign titled, We Do Not Accept Corruption in Police!
At a news conference, the IGP management said that the action’s goal was to prevent and be aware of the risk of giving and accepting bribe. The campaign will be held in three stages and sees the training of employees within 56 workshops and informing people from all Moldovan settlements.
„The initiative is addressed both to policemen and citizens, as the giving and taking of bribe represents an offence and is punished under the law. In the last three years, the police have gone through a comprehensive process of modernization. One of the priorities is the strengthening of the capacities of preventing and combating corruption actions. At the IGP, there is a structure dealing with the combating of corruption among policemen; yet. We rely on prevention and awareness raising measures,” Panzari said.
Also, the IGP head said that the number of denunciations made by policemen on attempts of bribing had increased in 2018. “Seventy denunciations were registered in all, against 17 in 2017. I make an appeal to citizens and policemen not to give and not to take bribe and be by the side of those who fight the corruption phenomenon,” Alexandru Panzari said.
For his part, the IGP’s Strength Inspection Department, Eugeniu Piterschi, noted that the institution appreciated much the employees proving professionalism and integrity; therefore, the policemen who made most denunciations got diplomas today. “Five law-enforcers who reported most corruption acts will be awarded distinctions at the conference. We will further provide diverse stipulations to responsible employees,” Piterschi said.
According to IGP’s data, last year, 69 criminal files were opened for corruption deeds against policemen, compared to 112 files opened in 2017.
