Chisinau, 22 January /MOLDPRES/ - The leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), Vlad Plahotniuc, after the PDM’s weekly meeting today, made an appeal to all candidates registered in the electoral race to abstain from falsehoods, provocations and manipulations.
The Democrats’ leader noted that the participants in the polls should let the voters freely decide and exercise their right to vote democratically. “All current opinion polls showed that the Democratic Party records the highest increases in rating, the most spectacular dynamic in citizens’ confidence. We are sure of a record result for the party in the parliamentary elections and we rely on an as fair as possible ballot, as transparent as possible, as well-organized as possible and with equal possibilities and rights for all electoral contenders,” Plahotniuc noted.
Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu also came up with specifications on the polls due on 24 February, at the end of the PDM’s weekly meeting. He expressed perplexity about the position of the ACUM electoral bloc of boycotting the referendum, taking into account the fact that the opposition parties themselves had had campaigns of collecting signatures for cutting the number of lawmakers.
„PDM, when it started the information campaign on the change of the electoral system, launched also the idea of withdrawing the mandates of the MPs who betray voters’ interests. At that time, we were accused by the opposition that we want to impose something without consulting the citizens. Now, when we actually consult the citizens’ opinions, the opposition boycotts the referendum. We see that Maia Sandu and Andrei Nastase are against their own initiatives,” Candu said.
The parliament speaker gave assurances that, if the idea of cutting the number of lawmakers and withdrawing the mandates is backed following this referendum, consultations with the Venice Commission will start immediately after the elections, in order to promote these legislative amendments.
