Moldovan parliament speaker meets OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's president

Chisinau, 22 January /MOLDPRES/ - Actions undertaken by the authorities for the organization and holding of the parliamentary elections due on 24 February 2019 were discussed by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) George Tsereteli, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
Andrian Candu referred to the developments in Moldova on the pre-electoral period and authorities’ efforts aimed at ensuring the carrying out of a fair, well-organized process, in line with the international standards. The parliament speaker said that all needed measures were undertaken to ensure a free, fair, balanced, safe, correct, inclusive ballot, so that the polls show the will of Moldova’s people.
”For the authorities, the most important thing is that the elections be recognized as free and fair, both in Moldova and on the international stage,” Andrian Candu said.
For his part, George Tsereteli stressed that the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly was by the side of Moldova, was keeping a close eye on the developments, in order to provide the country needed support and encouraged the authorities to ensure the carrying out of an electoral process in accordance with the democratic standards. The OSCE/ ODIHR (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights) will have an observation mission for the elections due in Moldova, which will assess the ballot from the viewpoint of the commitments taken by the country and the international standards as to the holding of democratic polls.
At the meeting, the officials exchanged opinions on the developments registered in the Transnistrian conflict settlement and the programme of actions for commemorating the Holocaust victims, planned for 29 January 2019.
President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly George Tsereteli is on a fact-collecting visit to Moldova on 20-23 January 2019. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is made up of 323 lawmakers representatives of the legislative bodies from 57 countries.
