File of former president of Moldova's Academy of Sciences and his wife sent to court

Chisinau, 24 January /MOLDPRES/ - The former president of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (ASM) and his wife – former rector of ASM, will be tried for abuse of power and abuse of office.

According to prosecutors, the offences would have been committed on the period 1 January 2011 – 30 June 2016.

The criminal prosecution started based on a notification by an ASM employee, as well as the results of the financial inspection.

According to the inquiry, the spouses committed a string of infringements, which caused damages worth almost one million lei to the state budget.

The defendants would have illicitly allotted them higher salaries for activities of management and research carried out, as well as unjustified bonuses and increases, being often on business trips outside Moldova and rehabilitation leaves.

During the inquiry, the suspects were obliged not to leave Moldova. At the same time, distraint was levied on the dwelling where they live.

Both defendants resigned from offices. If found guilty, the spouses run the risk of being fined with up to 57,500 lei or sentenced to up to three years of imprisonment, in both cases with the deprivation of right to hold certain offices for a period from two to five years.
