Chisinau, 4 February /MOLDPRES/ - Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Tudor Ulianovschi has had a meeting with a United Nations expert in the human rights sector, Thomas Hammarberg, on a visit to Moldova to unveil a new report on human rights in Moldova’s Transnistrian region, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s press service has reported.
At the meeting, Thomas Hammarberg referred to the positive developments, as compared to the report from 2013, on the gender quality, rights of disabled people, presence of more NGOs working on this subject, settlement of problems dealing with human rights in the 5+2 format, confidence building measures on both banks of Dniester, etc.
The expert noted that another positive result recorded was the adoption of the National Action Plan in the Human Rights Sector for 2018-2022 (PNADO III), which provides for concrete actions for the observance of human rights in Moldova’s Transnistrian region, including through the enforcement of the national legislation throughout the country, re-establishment and preservation of the dialogue with the key actors of the process of talks, non-admission of the infringement of human rights in several special categories of residents from the region, etc.
Minister Tudor Ulianovschi appreciated the UN expert’s efforts. He said that the Moldovan government was permanently concerned about the problem of observance of human rights on all the territory of Moldova and the Report by Thomas Hammarberg would help promote policies in the concerned field, especially for the Transnistrian region. “We express certainty that your Report will generate topics of meditation and joint approaches of problems dealing with the improvement of the system of protection and promotion of human rights both in the Transnistrian region and, in general, in Moldova,” Minister Tudor Ulianovschi specified.
Expert Thomas Hammarberg has increased interest in strengthening the human rights in Moldova’s Transnistrian region, for which he paid more fact-collecting visits to the region in 2012 and published the Report on human rights in the Transnistrian region of Moldova on 14 February 2013. The document identified the main fields in terms of observance of human rights, in need of adjusting and progress, elucidating more recommendations. The goal of the current visit is to present his new country report on the developments registered following his report from 2013 and a follow-up visit to Moldova on 28 May – 1 June 2018.
