Moldovan foreign affairs minister participates in Meeting of Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS

Chisinau, 7 February /MOLDPRES/ - Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Tudor Ulianovschi has participated in the Meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, held in Washington on 6 February 2019. The event was hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s press service has reported.

In his speech given at the meeting, Tudor Ulianovschi appreciated the progress made by the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS and informed about Moldova’s willingness to consider possibilities of cooperation in the world in efforts to fight the terrorism.

Attending the event, President of United States Donald J. Trump stressed the importance to ensure the continuing of efforts to completely combat the Islamic State Terrorist Organization.

The participants in the event tackled achievements of the Global Coalition in Syria and Iraq in the last four years and set new goals of cooperation at the global level, in order to prevent the resurgence of the terrorist group, including in the zones recently liberated from the control of ISIS. At the same time, the participants discussed ways the partner states might contribute to efforts of providing assistance for the stabilization and security of the regions which suffered in the wake of the presence of ISIS.

The Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS was created at an initiative by the USA in September 2014. The main goal of the Coalition is to destroy the Islamic State and the affiliated terrorist organizations. At present, there are 74 states and five international organizations among the Coalition’s members.

Minister Tudor Ulianovschi is on a working visit to the United States on 5-8 February 2019. The agenda of the Moldovan diplomacy head, besides participation in the Meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, includes also bilateral meetings with officials of the U.S. Department of State, National Security Council and the Congress.
