Moldovan farmers carry out season works despite frost risk

Chisinau, 05 March /MOLDPRES/ – There have been completed some of spring agricultural works, while others are supposed to be carried out, even if there is still a frost risk, the ministry of agriculture, regional development and environment's (MADRM) information and media communication service has reported.

"A large part of agricultural producers in the country have started the sowing of spring cereal crops. There exist all necessary conditions for it, like: matured soil, sufficient moisture and oxygenation level etc. Even if there is a risk of frost and possible snowfall – let us not forget that as such the winter conditions can still occur. But in this case, the peanuts could suffer more, but farmers are aware about it and they set their work so as to have as little damage as possible," specified the MADRM's head of production and processing policy department and regulation of quality of plant origin products, Vasile Sarban.

As it stands for the viticulture and fruit growing, Vasile Sarban mentioned that, at present, there have been completed the dry cleaning works in general and it is only expected the budding period.

In other words, the profile minister said that in recent few years, the notion of "spring works" has disappeared in agricultural field.

"The conditions of climate change made it possible for us to pass directly from winter into summer, decimating a gradual increase of almost 10ºC in the air, which has actually constituted the spring. We can hardly affirm that it is just fine because these changes imply additional risks to farmers, with eventual material damages," explained Vasile Sarban.

Within context, the MADRM's staff chief has urged farmers to insure their business affairs in case of nasty weather, being a usual practice abroad.
