Moldovan PM sends congratulatory message on occasion of 70th anniversary of creation of Council of Europe

Chisinau, 05 May /MOLDPRES/ – Prime Minister, Pavel Filip, has addressed today a congratulatory message to Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), Thorbjorn Jagland, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Organisation's creation, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.
"Built on the ruins of the WWII and guided by the idea of a long – lasting peace, the CoE has become a true home of democracy, the rule of law and human rights. It has always been a reliable partner of our country. Throughout its institutions, including the Venice Commission, it has contributed to the process of forming and consolidating Moldova as a state," says the message signed by PM Pavel Filip.
The head of the executive has said that Moldova's accession to the European Convention on Human Rights in 1997 is equally important. At present, society of Moldova can not imagine the lack of access to the European Court of Human Rights, which is the most effective mechanism for protection of human rights in the world.
Over the years, Moldova has become part of 92 Council of Europe Treaties which regulate the most diverse areas: the fight against torture, protection of social rights and national minorities, fight against corruption, money laundering and trafficking in human beings, and personal data protection.
"We appreciate the current implementation of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Moldova 2017 – 2020, which is the second framework document of this kind, as well as cooperation programmes dedicated to reforms aimed at improving the governance process at all levels," says the message signed by Pavel Filip.
The Council of Europe was founded on 05 May 1949 and it is the largest organisation on the continent in terms of protecting human rights, democracy and the rule of law. It includes 47 Member States, of which 28 are part of the EU block. Moldova joined the organisation on 13 July 1995.
