Moldova marks Europe Day, Victory Day

Chisinau, 9 May /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova today marks the Europe Day and Victory Day and commemoration of the heroes who died for the Motherland’s Independence.
Today morning, Prime Minister Pavel Filip and President Igor Dodon participated in a ceremony dedicated to the Victory Day and commemoration of the heroes who fell for the Motherland’s Independence, held at the Eternity memorial complex.
Also today, a programme of actions, dedicated to the Europe Day and commemoration of the victims of the World War II, organized by the Chisinau city hall, will be carried out in the Stefan cel Mare public garden. Actions dedicated to the two holidays were held by more political formations.
For the first time ever, the Europe Day was marked in Moldova in 2006. Nevertheless, the parliament declared Europe Day official holiday in Moldova as late as on 28 April 2017.
Europe Day is a yearly holiday of peace and unity in Europe. There are two dates for marking this day: 5 May for the Council of Europe and 9 May for the European Union.
This day is also known as Schuman Day, as it commemorates the historical declaration of the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. By this declaration, Robert Schuman proposed a union of coal and steel industries of France, West Germany and other states, which led to the setting up of the European Coal and Steel Community. This event is regarded a fundamental moment in the history of Europe.
9 May is marked in different forms in most European Union member states and the bordering countries. The EU local offices of Europe and from all over the world organize diverse activities and events for all ages. Each year, thousands of citizens participate in visits, discussions, concerts and other events, held to mark the Europe Day and Europe, in general.
More than 60 million people died in the World War II.
Over 2,000 policemen will ensure the public order on Europe Day and Victory Day.
