Chisinau, 9 May /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Pavel Filip commemorated the heroes who died in the World War II, at a solemn ceremony held at the Eternity memorial complex today. Attending the event were President Igor Dodon, cabinet members, representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Chisinau, veterans and guests of Moldova’s capital, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The prime minister laid flowers at the monuments The Eternal Fire, The Stele of Moldovan Heroes and The Grieving Mother.
Filip stressed that the 9 May day was of special significance, as two holidays are concomitantly marked on this day: the Day of Victory over the fascism and the Europe Day. “These are two days closely connected between them. Practically all united Europe participated in the fight against the fascism. Subsequently, five years after this victory, Europe recovered from ruins and started the political project we see today – a united Europe and in wellbeing. On 9 May, we honour the heroes who fought for peace and we think about the European future of our country,” Pavel Filip said. The PM highlighted that EU represented a symbol of peace and freedom and the European integration was the only way of Moldova’s development.
In the context, the prime minister said that a governmental plan titled, Memory. Honour. Respect, had been approved in the beginning of the mandate of the current cabinet, to support the war veterans. Filip also said that the plan had been fully carried out. This year, the war veterans will receive material assistance worth 10,000 lei each and the people who did not directly participate in the war, but supplied the combat actions – 5,000 lei each.
About 460 veterans of the World War II live in Moldova.
